about

The Ghost in the Haze

It sounds like neon. Like a neon light made sounds being propelled through a tunnel, where it is bouncing off the walls, like it’s a god particle, touching everything, and all it can hear, whilst speeding, is the wind. The roaring wind. Screaming its lungs out at you. Or just a world explaining itself.

Julien Skrobek makes noise under a lot of different names – Butch Bag, Static Park, The Killer Came From The Bronx – but Ghost was one of the first projects of his I heard. I believe it was the Untitled CDr on Inactivist, around the time Julien was putting work on one of his (many) labels, the much missed and revered Slow Death.

I don’t have Untitled anymore, but I do have Wangol and its thick, punishing HNW is that perfect mix of punishing and droney.

Neon Haze is something different. Vaporwall, Skrobek fittingly calls it. The punishing low end is there, everpresent as is the signature of most HNW but it is the bright tones that, almost literally, sing out, garlanding the forever shifting crunches below it. It reminds me of some of the best HNW experimentations such as GRY SMK’s synth-drone-HNW. And yes, I am one of those that believes HNW is a broad church, full of such experimentation and movement and drone – there’s a whole world in a guitar, and there’s a whole world in HNW.

Skrobek is utterly restless and inquisitive when it comes to making noise, and his evolution has played wonderfully across many projects, collaborations and labels, and Neon Haze is a new marker, and a high point, in his discography.

***

The world demands to be listened to. It wants to slow down your propulsion and it always very nearly catches you; the roaring, ever-increasing like slow, pointed footsteps breaking into a run. It is a time trial ghost in Mario Kart when you’re in first place, there, waiting for you to falter, for your vapor to falter, for your drone to dissolve, but it won’t and the chase, this disparate race will last forever.
